Most parents walk into a nursery tour with a mental list of questions. The problem is, if you don't know what a good answer sounds like, you can leave nodding politely at responses that should have been red flags.

1. What's your staff-to-child ratio, and how do you maintain it during breaks and staff absences?

Why it matters: Ratios are the single strongest predictor of care quality. But the legal minimum is just that — a minimum. The real question is what happens at 10:30am when someone needs the loo.

What a good answer sounds like: A specific number for each age group, plus a clear explanation of how ratios are covered during breaks, sickness, and holidays. Bonus points if they mention running below the legal maximum.

Red flag: Vague answers, or "we always meet the regulations" without specifics.

2. Are you registered and inspected — and can I see your most recent report?

Why it matters: Registration with Ofsted (UK) or state licensing (US) is the baseline, not the prize. The inspection report is where you learn what the inspector actually noticed.

What a good answer sounds like: They'll happily direct you to the report — often they'll have it on display. They should be comfortable discussing any areas flagged for improvement and what they've done about them.

Red flag: Defensiveness, or steering you away from older reports.

3. What qualifications do your staff hold, and how long have they been with you?

Why it matters: Turnover is the childcare industry's open secret. A setting where staff have been around for years usually means good management, fair pay, and consistent care for your child.

What a good answer sounds like: In the UK, a good ratio of Level 3 Early Years Educators (or above) on the floor. In the US, staff with CDA credentials or early childhood degrees. Plus honest tenure figures — ideally with several staff who've been there 2+ years.

Red flag: A mostly unqualified team, or frequent mentions of "our new starter."

4. Walk me through a typical day — what does it actually look like?

Why it matters: "Play-based learning" means very different things in different settings. You want to know the real rhythm your child will live by.

What a good answer sounds like: A clear structure with a balance of free play, adult-led activities, outdoor time, meals, and rest. They should mention how they handle transitions (these are hard for young children) and how they adapt for children who need more or less stimulation.

Red flag: Either rigid hour-by-hour schedules with no flexibility, or vague "we follow the children's lead" answers with no underlying structure.

5. How do you handle settling in?

Why it matters: The first few weeks shape how your child feels about nursery for months afterwards. Rushed settling-in is one of the most common regrets parents report.

What a good answer sounds like: A gradual process over at least a week or two, with parents present initially, building up slowly. A named key person (UK) or primary caregiver (US) assigned to your child. Flexibility if your child needs more time.

Red flag: "Most children settle within a day" or pressure to leave quickly.

6. How do you communicate with parents — day-to-day and when something goes wrong?

Why it matters: You'll be handing over your child for 8–10 hours. What you get told at pickup matters enormously.

Why it matters: These things will happen. How they're handled tells you everything about the setting's culture.

What a good answer sounds like: Clear exclusion policies (for example, 48 hours after stomach bugs). At least one paediatric first aider on site at all times. Written incident reports for any bumps. An honest approach to biting — they don't pretend it never happens, and they don't name the other child.

Red flag: Discomfort with the question, or policies that seem designed to minimise parent complaints rather than protect children.

8. What do meals and snacks look like, and how do you handle allergies?

Why it matters: Your child will eat 1–2 meals and several snacks there every day. The quality matters, and allergy protocols can be literally life-or-death.

What a good answer sounds like: Fresh food cooked on-site where possible, a published menu, clear allergy management (colour-coded plates, named meal trays, trained staff). They should ask detailed questions about your child's diet, not just tick a box.

Red flag: Heavy reliance on pre-packaged food, or vague allergy answers.

9. What's your outdoor space like, and how often do children use it?

Why it matters: Outdoor time is tied to almost every measure of child wellbeing — physical development, sleep, mood, immunity. Settings that treat it as optional are missing something fundamental.

What a good answer sounds like: Daily outdoor access in all but the worst weather, with proper kit provided or requested. A garden or outdoor area used for real play, not just a concrete yard with a couple of trikes.

Red flag: "We go outside when the weather's nice" (translation: rarely).

10. How do you support children with additional needs or different developmental paces?

Why it matters: Even if your child doesn't have identified additional needs now, the answer reveals how the setting thinks about individual children versus group management.

What a good answer sounds like: Examples of specific accommodations they've made. In the UK, a named SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). In the US, familiarity with IEPs or IFSPs. A willingness to work with external therapists if needed.

Red flag: "We treat all children the same" — which usually means they don't notice individual differences.

The Bonus Question Most Parents Forget

"Can I speak to a current parent?"

Good settings will happily connect you with families whose children currently attend. What those parents say — unprompted — will tell you more than any tour ever could.
